Do you train hard but still feel slow on the river?

  • Is your forward stroke technique mostly self-taught?
  • Do you struggle to maintain control through boils and bluff corners?
  • Are you frustrated by the silly mistakes that cost you time?

On Canterbury Kayaking’s 3-day Coast to Coast Racing Skills Course, you’ll fine-tune your technique on the actual race route with expert coaching in your racing kayak. Learn how to find the fastest braids, glide through bluff corners with control, and maintain speed through boils without wasting energy. With focused instruction and real-time feedback, you’ll become smoother, more efficient, and ready to race.

Without the right technique, you’ll always be working harder than necessary.

Many paddlers train for months but still struggle to maintain their speed due to an inefficient stroke, lose time from ending up in the wrong braids, and have to fight their way through bluff corners. Without the necessary skills, wasted energy and costly mistakes can keep you from achieving the race result you deserve.

In this course, you’ll fine-tune your forward stroke technique, master braid selection, and learn how to maintain speed through the trickiest of bluff corners. You’ll also gain the confidence to paddle smarter, not just harder, so you can conserve energy while racing faster.

Once you’ve developed these race-specific skills, you’ll paddle down the Waimakariri River with control, efficiency, and the confidence to achieve a Coast to Coast race result to be proud of.

Meet Your Coach

Sam Milne is the most experienced kayak coach on the Waimakariri River and the founder of Canterbury Kayaking.

After working with over 1,000 Coast to Coast paddlers, Sam has helped numerous top athletes refine their technique and river strategy including Jess Simson, who won back-to-back Longest Day titles in 2014 and 2015.

Through coaching athletes at every level, Sam has seen that many paddlers waste valuable time on the river—not because they aren’t fit enough, but because their technique is holding them back. He’s watched competitors lose speed through inefficient strokes, get overtaken in the braids, and get spun out at bluff corners instead of cutting through with control and efficiency.

Sam knows that paddling harder won’t make you faster if your technique isn’t dialled in. That’s why he designed this 3-day race-specific training course—to help paddlers like you train on the actual Coast to Coast route, refine their efficiency, and master the key river skills needed for a faster, smoother race.

On this course, you’ll receive expert coaching, real-time feedback, and race-proven strategies to help you paddle smarter, faster, and with full control in the Coast to Coast.

I took this course to help improve my skills for Coast to Coast. Throughout the course my confidence grew and I gained not only the skills to get down the river, but also to enjoy the kayaking stage. I would definitely recommend Canterbury Kayaking to anyone competing in the Coast to Coast

I had an absolutely fantastic time on this course. I was really comfortable on flat water but lacked confidence on the river, this course really helped increase that (massively) and the teams experience and guidance was invaluable! Would highly recommend if you’re on the fence, worth its weight in gold!

This course has been extremely worthwhile. I've been multisport kayaking for several years & completed the C2C a couple of times but always wanting to improve my kayak skills. This course with Sam was just excellent. We covered a whole range of kayak skills with each one well explained & broken down to simple steps for us to follow. The whole course was professionally run, and I've come away with a whole lot more kayaking knowledge and skills. I'd recommend Canterbury Kayaking for anyone wanting to improve their paddling.

Having had a big paddling scare 2 years ago I hadn’t done a lot of paddling. This course gave me back my confidence and I found my love of paddling again. Every part of the course was amazing. Multiple types of great sessions. Sam is an amazing instructor and you can be confident doing anything in a boat when he’s around. Recommend anyone with any level of paddling skills do some courses with Sam. He’s professional, serious, calming and fun and he’s good company.

I signed up to increase my confidence and further my skills after 18 months of no paddling. This course did exactly that, with Sam and Will’s knowledgeable and meticulous coaching meaning I left each day feeling safe, confident and thoroughly enjoying my time on the whitewater! While the weather didn’t play ball for the last day, Sam had a well thought-out Plan B (and C) that added another level to the previous days learnings. Canterbury Kayaking definitely stands out for their river knowledge (you’ll get the best lines every time) and safety. Thanks for an epic course Sam and Will, I’m looking forward to my upcoming Waimakariri Gorge trip with Canterbury Kayaking!

After a few years off, I signed up for another Coast 2 Coast. Since it had been a while, I needed to refresh my grade 2 cert and wanted a trip down the gorge, so I signed up for this course. I got so much more than “just” a refreshed certificate and a Gorge trip. On day one, Sam asked me what I was looking for. I admitted to always being a little nervous and my habit of taking the chicken lines. We spent two days working on and remembering the fundamentals of paddling. This was a perfect lead-up to our gorge trip, where he pushed me out of my comfort zone and to paddling better lines. I signed up, looking for a piece of paper. I finished a more confident paddler with new skills. Even after many years of paddling, you can still improve with the help of great instructors.
