Course Schedule (Days 1–4)
Day 1
6:30am – 4:00pm
Your course begins at Wharenui Pool in Christchurch, where you’ll work on either learning to roll for the first time, or improving your rolling technique.
After the pool session, we move to Lake Rua in Christchurch to check your equipment. You’ll also have the option to purchase any equipment you’re missing from our shop at a discounted rate.
The rest of the day focuses on developing your whitewater boat-handling skills so you are set up for success when you hit the river on day two.
Day 2
7:00am – 5:00pm
We leave Christchurch at 7:00am and travel to Murchison — the best location in New Zealand to develop your whitewater skills for Coast to Coast.
Once in Murchison on day two, you’ll paddle from midday until around 5:00pm. Afterwards, we’ll meet for dinner at a local restaurant where you can chat with your coach and connect with other like-minded paddlers.
While we could use the Waimakariri River, we choose to run this programme in Murchison for the following reasons:
- More river time – While the Waimakariri may seem closer to Christchurch, the time spent driving to and from the Waimak each day can add up to more time in vehicles than driving to Murchison once. Once in Murchison, the rivers are only minutes from our accommodation.
- Better quality rapids – While there are some difficult rapids in the Gorge section of the Waimak, they are often spread out between long flatwater sections that do little for skill development. When we paddle the Waimakariri, we can end up spending a lot of time and energy paddling flatwater — good for endurance, but not ideal for building whitewater skills. The runs around Murchison provide far more varied practice on actual Grade 2 rapids, which accelerates your skills and confidence.
- More reliable river levels – The rivers around Murchison are less susceptible to flooding than the Waimakariri. If one river is high, there is nearly always an excellent Grade 2 run available in Murchison that still provides the type of rapids you need to prepare for the Waimak Gorge.
- Less wind – Strong winds are a constant issue in the exposed valleys of the Waimakariri River. This can make staying warm difficult and communication with your coach much harder. In the more sheltered valleys around Murchison, this is far less of a problem.
Day 3
8:00am – 5:00pm
With no long travel required, day three is all about maximising your river time.
You’ll spend the full day paddling real whitewater, repeating key features, and building the consistency and control that only comes from doing lots of quality reps.
Each run helps you improve faster, reinforcing what you learned on day two while giving you the river mileage you need to feel genuinely confident.
We wrap up with another relaxed dinner together in Murchison.
Day 4
8:00am – 2:00pm
During your fourth river trip, you’ll paddle more independently, demonstrating the skills you’ve developed over the previous three days. Your coach will still be alongside you, offering guidance when needed, but you’ll be taking the lead.
We aim to finish in Murchison around 2:00pm so you have time to travel home.
Course Schedule (Day 5)
Waimakariri Gorge Trip
Meeting: 7:45am Sheffield – Finishing: 4pm Sheffield.
You can leave your vehicle in Sheffield for the day and travel with us in the van. We’ll load your kayak onto our trailer and take care of the logistics so you can focus entirely on paddling at your best.
We will stop for a short lunch break on the side of the river around midday.
When you paddle into Woodstock, our van and trailer will be waiting for you so you get changed immediately and get dropped back to your vehicle in Sheffield without delay.
