If you're doing the Kathmandu Coast to Coast, knowing you can get down through the Gorge safely is absolutely vital. Join us for a guided trip and we'll take care of all the safety and logistics, plus provide excellent guidance as you paddle.

Experience the Coast to Coast kayak section.

We'll guide you down the most crucial 55km of river, from Mt White to Woodstock. This includes the braided top section, rock gardens, bluffs, Hamilton Rapids, and Waimakariri Gorge. You'll experience everything you need to see before race day at a comfortable pace.

Paddle with the most experienced guides on the Waimak'.

Canterbury Kayaking's founder Sam Milne has successfully guided over 100 trips down the Waimak Gorge. That's no small feat for the Waimak', and puts him amongst the few people in New Zealand that would have done this many. Sam likes to guide on every trip alongside his team, so you can rest assured you're in good hands.

The only operator with sat-phone safety systems.

We think a lot about safety, so you don't have to. Canterbury Kayaking ensures your safety by carrying a sat-phone, along with the standard VHF radios, and emergency locator beacons. If we have a problem along the way, we have the ability to take care of it for you, fast.

Join a supportive, and solid crew.

We understand that while the Gorge feels like home for us, you might feel intimidated by its features and isolation. Our guides go out of their way to make sure you feel comfortable with what's happening. We stay together in small groups and provide encouragement as you take on each section of the river.

Recommended by Kathmandu Coast to Coast.

The Kathmandu Coast to Coast recommends that kayak competitors do a guided trip, especially internationals who may not be familiar with NZ rivers. Over the past 8 years, Canterbury Kayaking has safely guided over 1000 people through the Gorge.  We are officially recognised by the Coast to Coast as a "preferred provider".

Develop skills faster, from trained teachers.

Our team are not just guides, we're primarily skills teachers with degrees in Outdoor Education. Most of the year, we spend our time teaching kayaking. This means we can not only guide you down the river but also provide helpful tips to improve your paddling and make you perform better.

Gain multisport knowledge, from an NZOIA instructor.

Our guides also have awards from the New Zealand Outdoor Instructors Association - the nationally recognised body. We're not just experienced paddlers, but have registered qualifications you can trust. This includes the latest multisport kayak instructor award commissioned by the Coast to Coast.

Your safety is covered, with Adventure Mark certification.

Paddling the Gorge is a big undertaking, and safety needs to be taken seriously. We've gone through every possible scenario and ensured we've reduced risk as much as practical. Our systems have been signed off and monitored by Adventure Mark. Tell your loved ones you're going paddling with one of the safest operators in New Zealand.

What our clients say...

I really couldn't have done Coast to Coast without your team's guidance.

Bryan Schofield (Matamata), 16 Feb 2019.

I was very nervous to go through the Gorge, but this made it easy with Sam's knowledge of the river.
