If you're doing the Coast to Coast and thinking about doing your Grade 2 Certificate Course with us, this half-day preparation course is the perfect starting point.
Make gaining your grade 2 certificate easier.
If you've never kayaked before, learning everything you need to earn your certificate in just four days can be a big challenge. That's why we created this introduction course. Get a head start on your skills before your grade 2 course begins, so that you have the confidence to perform at your best.
Learn at your pace, without the pressure.
The purpose of this course is to help you gain confidence with kayaking, and provide some fundamentals to work on. There is no pressure of assessment, nor rush to prepare you for the river. Make your first paddling experience a positive one, and you'll enjoy kayaking so much more.
Receive gear and equipment advice, from an experienced instructor.
Kayaking is a very gear-intensive sport, and it can get technical fast. As a novice, it's easy to make poor gear choices based on online marketing, or shop assistant advice. As part of your introduction course, your coach will break down all the essential gear in a simple and easy-to-follow way. We'll provide advice specific to your needs, and you can even purchase gear from us if you wish.

Canterbury Kayaking is an approved training provider, recommended by the Kathmandu Coast to Coast. We specialise in helping you prepare to kayak in this iconic race, and have a complete pathway to get you there. From this introduction, to guided trips before the race, we have all your kayak skills covered.
Develop skills faster, from trained teachers.
|Our coaches are not your regular guides or instructors, we aim to provide a higher level of coaching. Our coaches have degrees in outdoor education and have spent years in pursuit of the optimal teaching method. We pride ourselves on our ability to teach you complex skills, in a range of environments, more effectively than many instructors in New Zealand.||
Gain more knowledge, from an NZOIA instructor.
Our coaching team has been independently assessed for technical skills and instructional ability. The New Zealand Outdoor Instructor's Association is the nationally recognised body, and all our coaches hold NZOIA kayak qualifications. You can rest assured you'll be working with some of the highest qualified coaches in NZ.
Your safety is covered, with Adventure Mark certification.
|A pool session and some flat-water time doesn't sound too extreme, but we always take safety seriously. Our system has been awarded "Adventure Mark". This means any paddling you choose to do with us now, or in the future, will always be done in a safe manner, surpassing New Zealand safety standards.|
